Chemical and petrochemical plants consume large amounts of water in generating their end product. Water is heated in the boiler to create steam for power generation and cracking hydrocarbons in preparation for further processing. Then the steam is condensed and the TOC levels in stream are measured with the help of an online TOC analyzer to determine if they are low enough for the steam condensate to be re-circulated to avoid the high cost of the initial clean-up.

If the steam condensate can be reused, the manufacturing units receive credit for the returned steam (In many plants a higher credit is received if the steam condensate is monitored for TOC). If TOC levels in the steam condensate exceed the limit for re-polishing, then the condensate is sent to the outfall or waste.

Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Measurement in Waste water / Storm water

Chemical and petrochemical plants are surrounded by storm water wells. These wells are designed for storm water runoff during rains or a major spill. Normal storm water runoff is permitted for discharge into a body of water even if untreated. However, due to the nature of chemical and petrochemical processes the storm water in the wells may have a high content of organic contaminants. When its TOC measured is higher than the permitted level, it must be diverted into a retention (holding) tank to be slowly released into the wastewater treatment plant. When the TOC measured is lower than permitted, it can be discharged untreated. Regardless, the final effluent in storm water or waste water must be monitored for TOC and will have to meet the discharge permit before being discharged into a body of water.
