Nutrient Agar with MUG is used for fluorometric confirmation of E. coli.
MUG is an acronym for 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide. Approximately 97% of Escherichia coli strains produce the enzyme β-D-glucuronidase,which produces a 4-methylumbelliferyl moiety that fluoresces blue under long-wave UV light. The MUG test can be used for rapid identification of E. coli.
