1 % TTC (triphenyltetrazolium chloride) is a redox indicator used in microbiology to detect microbial growth and assess cell viability. TTC is colorless in its oxidized form and is reduced by metabolically active cells to a deep red, water-insoluble formazan, making viable colonies easy to visualize on solid media. Because only living cells with active respiratory enzymes reduce TTC, it is also used to help enumerate viable microorganisms and to evaluate dehydrogenase/respiratory activity in biological and biochemical assays.
