Durham tubes are small, inverted glass vials placed inside larger test tubes of culture broth to capture gas produced by microorganisms during carbohydrate fermentation. Visible bubbles in the inner vial indicate a positive gas reaction. Durham tubes are commonly used in microbiological fermentation tests when a qualitative (gas/no gas) result is sufficient and the exact volume of gas does not need to be measured.
