Classified Analytical Instruments for Hazardous Areas

Certain industrial production and treatment processes have a potential for the formation of ignitable or explosive atmospheres. These can originate from flammable vapors, gas or dust mixing with air to form a dangerous, combustible cloud.

The affected hazardous locations require intrinsically safe instrumentation to mitigate the risk of ignition and explosion. Across the globe there are several international certification standards in place that define the requirements for hazardous area equipment, e. g. UL Class 1, IECEx and ATEX.

See below for a list of our certified instruments. Additional detailed information is available on the related product pages.

Hazardous Locations – Overview of Classes, Divisions and Zones

Class/Div

The Class/Div directive is important for North America and Canada. There are three hazardous location classes which refer to the type of hazard:

  • Class 1: The hazard is a flammable vapor.
  • Class 2: The hazard is a flammable dust.
  • Class 3: The hazard is a flammable fiber, or other “flyings”.

In addition, divisions and zones refer to the constancy and/
or level of the hazard:

  • Division 1 or Zone 0: The hazard is continuous.
  • Division 1 or Zone 1: The hazard is intermittent.
  • Division 2 or Zone 2: The hazard is present only under abnormal conditions.

IECEx

An IECEx Certificate of Conformity attests that a sample of the Ex product, described on the Certificate, has been independently tested and found to comply with the International Standards listed in the Certificate. It also attests that the manufacturing site has been audited to verify that the manufacturer’s quality system meets IECEx requirements.

ATEX

The ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles) directive is important for Europe (EU-directive 94/9/EG). It describes what equipment and work environment is allowed in an environment with an explosive atmosphere:

  • Zone 0:  A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently.
  • Zone 1:  A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
  • Zone 2:  A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of dangerous substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.

TOC / TN / TP BioTector B7000 Analyzer BioTector B7000 Analyser for TOC / TN / TP: Certification options are available to European Standards (ATEX for Zone 1 and Zone 2) and to North American Standards (Class I Division 1 and Class I Division 2). Other options, such as IECEx, are available on request.
TOC BioTector B3500 Analyser for TOC: Certification options are available to North American Standards (Class 1, Div 2) and EU Standards (ATEX Zone 2).
Controller SC200 Controller The SC200 Universal Controller allows the use of digital and analog sensors, either alone or in combination, to provide compatibility with the broadest range of sensors.
Controller SC4200c Controller The SC4200c Controller provides data access at your fingertips, allowing you to know what is happening with your process no matter where you are. Intuitive menus, accessible maintenance instructions, and available Prognosys predictive diagnostics software ensure that you have full control of your wastewater process.
pH Differential and Combination
pH Sensors
Hach's differential pH sensors use an innovative, unique electrode technology which results in greater accuracy, less drift, and less frequent calibration. The LCP sensors are designed to meet more rigorous industrial applications.
Conductivity Inductive and Contacting
Conductivity Sensors
Hach's Inductive and Contacting Conductivity Sensors use innovative technology to eliminate the polarization and electrode coating problems common in harsh, industrial environments. Sensors feature plug-and-play technology to avoid complicated set-up procedures and sensors can be installed in a variety of styles.
Dissolved Oxygen LDO sc Optical Dissolved
Oxygen Sensor
The LDO (Luminescent Dissolved Oxygen) Probe requires no calibration for the entire 2 year life of the sensor cap, which means it is ready to start measuring your DO (Dissolved Oxygen) right out of the box.
Controller Orbisphere 3660Ex,
O2/H2 Controller
Orbisphere 3660Ex ATEX certified Controller for O2 and H2 sensors: When coupled with a choice of membrane covered, electrochemical sensors, the 366xEx is suitable for sampling dissolved concentrations from trace ppb to supersaturation, and gaseous concentrations from ppb to percent (%) levels.
Controller Orbisphere 3662Ex,
O2/H2 Controller
The Orbisphere 3662Ex Controller supports European Community ATEX directive and standards with marking: Ex II 1G, Ex ia IIC T4 Ga (corresponds to NFPA Class l Div l Group A,B) and IEC Certification IECEx LCI 09.0026X. Used to measure in aqueous or non-aqueous samples such as organics, olefins, fuels, monomers, aromatics, specialty chemicals, water, and other liquids and gases.
Oxygen, Hydrogen Orbisphere 3650 Ex,
Portable O2/H2 Analyzer
The Orbisphere 3650 Ex portable O2 / H2 Analyzer features an intrinsically safe non-rechargeable battery pack which allows up to 60 hours in continuous measuring mode. Stores up to 500 measurements. This item is IECEx certified.
